22" Cymbal & Gong Holy Grail ride cymbal - “American-style”

Moderate-weight ride cymbal with a squarish bell, in the style of some American cymbals of the 1950s. Excellent all purpose ride, crashable, with some complexity, and strong upper mid freqencies, strong bell and crash sounds. Holy Grail series cymbals are given a light patina, which gives them a classic look, and mellows the sound slightly.
The normal weight 22" has quite a big, full sound— it will be the strongest cymbal among a set of jazz cymbals, but not out of balance. The lighter 22s give a rather aggressive, dynamic rendition of a Tony Williams kind of sound, and are given a heavy patina which highlights that, and gives better stick definition.
The normal 22" ranges from 2275-2400g, the lighter version 2025-2100g.
8/27/2025 - The current selections at Cymbal & Gong are all under 2100g, and very nice— see Cathcart below. The available cymbals at Cymbal & Gong are similar, perhaps with a slightly airier sound.
Available cymbals
We have two [now one] thin 22″ American-style Holy Grails here, with a heavy patina. Both open up quickly, with a quick decay. Some very explosive dynamics are possible with these cymbals. Probably not great for heavy handed players— they will reward the player who takes the care to learn to handle them.
"Cathcart" - 2082g
Compared with the quite wild 22s Mick and Rita, Cathcart is a really solid light ride— more easily controllable, with a cleaner sound, good stick definition.
“Mick” - 2093g
This one is a Blakey-style brawler— interesting combination of an aggressive sound that handles dynamics very sensitively. You could make some big mistakes with it, but it will get out of your way quickly.
SOLD - “Rita” - 2068g
Possibly the more uncouth of the two? You’ll notice I played it with the butt of the stick for a moment— it wants to give you Coltrane @ Birdland level intensity.
“Decker” - 2384g - USED - $425.00
Absolute 50s American classic. selected— very deliberately— by an endorser, who recently returned it to downsize his collection. Robust, clean, higher sound, but not without complexity. Great for big band, or any situation calling for a slightly stronger cymbal than the average jazz ride.
Condition is used, excellent, with just one slightly rough spot on the edge.
